VOLTA Engineering Group at the Energy Industry Forum
The event held on 29 May confirmed a certain feeling of vigilance which has developed in recent months on the IT services market in the energy industry. On the one hand, positive expert assessment say for the fact that, in the next few years, the amount of funds invested by Russian companies, including energy companies, in IT will increase by 8% per year (Russia Vertical Markets 2012–2016 IT Spending Forecast, a report by IDC). On the other hand, fulfilment of obligations by energy companies to reduce network losses and increase the security of supply, including the obligations present in the state policy documents, is causing certain concern. It is associated with a possible reduction in investment programs, frequent changes of rules in the energy market and the difficulty of assessing the performance of IT systems. In particular, the speakers noted the discrepancy between the goals set before the energy industry such as increasing the level of automation and reducing the losses, and the lack of approved methodology for assessing the effect of modernization measures. In particular, Valery Vorotnitsky, Chief Research Engineer of OJSC Scientific Engineering Centre of the Federal Grid Company of Unified Energy System, drew the attention of the expert community to this non-compliance.
The experts were unanimous in their opinion that modernization of the industry will bring the desired effect only if the companies will turn from separate projects on automation and adoption of tracking technologies to complex integration of these with control systems of electric networks.
The same issues were discussed in the report of Yuriy Yuchshak, Director for Technical Development of VOLTA Engineering Group. The expert provided practical solutions developed by VOLTA Group in dispatch control systems and smart metering. It was noted that the portfolio of Landis+Gyr, Swiss partner of VOLTA Engineering Group, contains a line of Smart Metering solutions encompassing all levels—from object level (meters) to the top (data processing and analysis). VOLTA Group installs the meters produced by the world leader in smart metering as part of setting and upgrading retail electricity market metering systems at the facilities of OJSC Tyumenenergo. One of the trends in IT development in the energy sector is processing large amounts of data. In this regard, it was noted that VOLTA Engineering Group is engaged in localization and adaptation of the Ecologic Analytics system (remarkable for the ability to handle large amounts of data—up to 5 million customers) in Russia. The software will soon be available on the Russian market.
